EPA released the final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS (PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFBS, PFHxS, and GenX) on April 10, 2024:

  • PFOS MCL: 4 ppt
  • PFOA MCL: 4 ppt
  • PFHxS MCL: 10 ppt (was 9 ppt as part of the HI in the draft rule)
  • PFNA MCL: 10 ppt
  • HFPO-DA (GenX): 10 ppt
  • Mixtures containing PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS: Hazard Index of 1 (was 1.0 in the draft rule)

The countdown has begun for drinking water utilities to comply with these regulations and, in many cases, implement major programs to treat for PFAS in their water supply. Several States have previously established limits for PFAS in drinking water, and many utilities have already started or completed PFAS compliance programs. The new Federal regulations, however, are significantly lower than most current State standards, and even utilities with PFAS compliance plans in place may need to expand their programs.

What can drinking water utilities learn from those who have been through the process, and how can the industry cost-effectively comply with the new regulations given the limited funds available?

AMWA,
