HOUSTON—The Houston Business Roundtable (HBR) and Houston Area Safety Council recognized CDM Smith with a Silver Award in the General Contractor – Large category at the 32nd Houston Safety Excellence Awards on May 17, 2019. The award was presented to CDM Smith for the design-build of a new lift station and wastewater pretreatment upgrades for the Lubrizol Corporation at its Deer Park, Texas facility.

The Houston Safety Excellence Awards competition honors contractors and subcontractors in the Texas Gulf Coast Area who have achieved an outstanding record of on-the-job safety promotion and performance and brings the community together to observe and share best practices. To be eligible, competing firms must be nominated by a member company of HBR. Additionally, finalists go through a two-step evaluation process that includes a close review of their health and safety program and a field evaluation to verify the extent and effectiveness of program implementation.

While CDM Smith pushed the construction schedule by working 6 to 7 days a week during some phases, they made sure this decision would never jeopardize the safety of their employees or others.

“Our relationship and experience with CDM Smith span multiple sites in North America and are attributed to their dedication to execute projects on budget, within schedule and, most importantly, safely,” said Jesse Moreno, Indirect Sourcing Manager – CAPEX for Lubrizol. “Like in most large capital projects, we were up against a schedule to complete necessary infrastructure upgrades to support continued operational growth, and while CDM Smith pushed the construction schedule by working 6 to 7 days a week during some phases, they made sure this decision would never jeopardize the safety of their employees or others.”

“CDM Smith’s management team embarked on this project and remained steadfast, facing multiple climate and site condition changes,” said Angel Guzman, Lubrizol Health & Safety Manager. “With their daily site walkthroughs, employee participation and behavior-based “Good Catch” program, safety remained the top priority throughout the project and was reflected in the overall performance.”
