Installation B75 completed: New Wilhelmsburger Reichsstraße inaugurated
8 October 2019
Hamburg, Germany
In a pioneering project, the B75 federal highway in the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg was relocated to the multi-track railway line. The festive inauguration took place on 02.10.2019.

The unstable weather conditions could not harm the ceremonial inauguration of the new Wilhelmsburger Reichsstraße along the railway line. The Parliamentary State Secretary to the, a member of the Management Board of DB AG and the Managing Director of DEGES were present on this day and jointly inaugurated the urban motorway.

Not only the significant noise abatement by 15.1 kilometres of new noise barriers is to be evaluated as a great advantage. In addition, generous development space was created for urban development projects, as the railway line and the new urban motorway are now directly adjacent.

One of Hamburg's largest urban development projects, which was originally initiated by the citizens of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, is now coming to a worthy conclusion. On October 7th 2019, the new 4.6 kilometre city motorway will be opened to traffic and will be used by an estimated 60,000 vehicles daily.
The relocated road now runs parallel to the railway line and is equipped with comprehensive noise protection. This improves the quality of life for the residents of Wilhelmsburg.

CDM Smith was commissioned as planner and specialist building supervisor for all measures to improve the subsoil and remediate contaminated sites. For our experts, however, project B4/75 has not yet been completed to a full extent. On the occasion of the approaching deconstruction of the former railway line, on whose site apartments are to be built in the future, two former bridges over the former Wilhelmsburger Reichsstraße will be replaced by dams. In this follow-up project, CDM Smith is responsible for the detailed design of the subsoil improvements. The foundation and dam construction work is scheduled for 2020 and will be supervised by CDM Smith.

The opening of the new Wilhelmsburger Reichsstraße is sealed with a handshake.
