NAT Award

Philadelphia – The Underground Construction Association (UCA) awarded the Bergen Point Southwest Outfall Replacement project in Suffolk County, NY with the 2022 Project of the Year Award at the North American Tunneling Conference award ceremony in June of 2022. This award is presented to an individual or group “that has shown insight and understanding of underground construction in a significant project, which may include practices, developing concepts, theories, or technologies to overcome unusual problems within a project, resulting in little to no outstanding issues.”

CDM Smith provided design and construction management services from the initial assessment of the existing outfall, geotechnical engineering investigations across Great South Bay, shaft designs using ground freezing, tunnel design and inspection, and worked closely with the contractors in an innovative approach to the tunnel machine launch using micro-tunneling techniques followed by conversion to full tunnel construction.

This award was presented for projects with construction valued between $50 to $500M. Geotechnical, environmental, and construction risk assessments guided the team to an innovative tunneling approach of sewer pipe excavation depths reaching 100+ feet for Bergen Point, which treats approximately 40.5 million gallons of wastewater per day. The firm assisted in the replacement of a preexisting, failing 72-inch diameter, 14,200-foot-long sewer outfall pipe located under Great South Bay.

A huge thank you to the entire CDM Smith project team, from the geotechnical and tunneling, structural, electrical, water services, and the program management groups!
