Building at icy heights: CDM Smith coordinates safety on Germany’s highest mountain Zugspitze
It is a project of superlatives - with the world's highest steel support for aerial tramways (127 m), the world's largest height difference of 1,945 m in one section and the world's longest free span of more than 3,200 m, the new cable car on the Zugspitze breaks three records. In the future, it will not only shorten long waiting times for visitors, but also offer them a unique view over the entire Alpine region.
The Bavarian Zugspitzbahn mountain railway AG has charged Heiko Nöll with the health and safety coordination of the construction of both the new valley station and mountain station. Among the biggest challenges facing the project are the weather conditions at almost 3,000 m altitude, the exposed location of the construction site on the mountain and the associated difficult logistics. However, in less than 60 days, the system is expected to be fully operational and the first passengers transported.
