The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released the 2012 Guidelines for Water Reuse, which includes information on water reuse practices and projects, spanning low-technology solutions and advanced treatment processes, and place a greater emphasis on case studies. EPA contracted with CDM Smith to develop the 2012 update.

The Clean Water America Alliance has awarded PepsiCo Frito-Lay a 2012 U.S. Water Prize for its Casa Grande, Arizona, USA snack food manufacturing facility. Thanks to an innovative process water reuse system and alternative energy, the facility runs almost entirely on renewable energy and recycled water while producing nearly zero waste—something the company refers to as “Near Net Zero.”

By presenting an outline of innovative and alternative water supply projects to meet the projected demand, MDWASD met approval requirements for its 20-year water use permit. One project in progress is the South District water reclamation plant, which will produce 21 mgd of highly treated effluent for groundwater recharge, augmenting the area’s drinking water supplies.
