Advanced Simulation of Urban Systems

Innovation in Sustainable Community Planning

Developed at CDM Smith’s Neysadurai Centre, our urban systems modeling process simulates the performance of a city’s water, energy, transportation, solid waste, urban form and natural environment sectors using a suite of modeling tools. The simulation tracks the relationships among these sectors and the impacts related to land and water resources, greenhouse gas emissions and finances. Whether retrofitting an existing urban area or designing a new program or community, the modeling process allows decision makers to look at different options and make selections about green and traditional technologies and strategies that provide the most benefit. Key features of the urban systems modeling process include:

  • Ability to test urban form, facilities and technology combinations, generate outputs for specific key performance indicators, understand relationships, and analyze design options from financial and social perspectives—providing the knowledge to make confident decisions well before committing capital investment.
  • Versatility and adaptability in applications ranging from specific planning solutions to eco-city development backed by experienced urban and regional planners, urban designers, engineers and environmental scientists of the CDM Smith organization.
  • Visually engaging displays of the simulation outputs, enabling stakeholders to test and see the results of their different choices, supporting consensus building and buy-in.

The power of CDM Smith’s integrated planning services lies in our ability to apply simulation techniques in the urban design process and to model sustainability solutions in virtual laboratories before investments are made. We continually develop, refine, and apply these Urban Systems Modeling capabilities at our Neysadurai Centre for Integrated Urban Solutions. By creating collaborative, stakeholder-focused platforms that enable our clients to align goals and outcomes with implementation strategies, we are helping to create economically vibrant, environmentally responsible and resilient communities where people want to live and work.
