North Cattlemen Road Named APWA Florida Chapter's 2014 Project of the Year

August 06, 2014

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts—The North Cattlemen Road improvements project was recognized as the American Public Works Association (APWA) Florida Chapter’s 2014 Project of the Year in the transportation $5 million to $25 million category. The award was given at the annual Florida Public Works Expo on July 11.

Partnering with Sarasota County, Florida, CDM Smith provided construction, engineering and inspection services for the 2.75-mile, four-lane extension of North Cattlemen Road, including roadway construction, utility relocation, stormwater improvements, LED lighting, a 30-foot box culvert bridge, 96-foot span bridge and reinforced earth block walls.

“This simple road project turned into a real challenge when the county added more than $6 million worth of park improvements to this contract,” said Chris Pecor, CDM Smith principal and project manager. “The project was transformed into a design-build effort to include a new bridge and move more than 500,000 cubic yards of earth to create the base for a 30-acre regatta island adjacent to the road and within Nathan Benderson Park’s 500-acre lake.”

The Olympic Village-style island will feature world class rowing facilities and act as a finish line viewing area with grandstands overlooking the 2,000-meter sprint course.

CDM Smith worked closely with the county parks department and its contractor to ensure construction access to the island and its amenities as both projects evolved with the same completion timeline.

“CDM Smith was instrumental in bringing all the stakeholders to the table to resolve construction-related issues and provide seamless coordination with multiple agencies to bring the project to a successful completion,” said Thai Tran, PE, Sarasota County operations manager.

As a result of the significant efforts to construct the island and the new roadway, which provided its only access, Sarasota County and the park’s world-class rowing facility have been selected to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. Learn more at worldclassrowing.com.
