CDM Smith Wins Contract to Plan and Design Integrated Water Infrastructure in Turkey

projects bring environmental improvements in seven municipalities

ANKARA, Turkey—Under a new contract with the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, funded through the European Union (EU) Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) Programme, CDM Smith will be assisting the Republic of Turkey in its alignment with European Union environmental legislation and the upgrade of its municipal infrastructure to safeguard human health and facilitate development. CDM Smith will conduct the project from its Ankara, Turkey office.

 
Ultimately, the projects will improve quality of life for the residents, facilitate economic development and support Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union. 

Under this € 2.5 million ($3.3 million) contract, CDM Smith is leading a multidisciplinary team of experts in preparing water and wastewater infrastructure master plans, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, environmental impact assessments, designs and tender packages for each of seven municipalities across Turkey: Bandırma (Balıkesir), Rize, Giresun, Çankırı, Niksar (Tokat), Kırşehir and Kastamonu. A crucial step in enhancing environmental protection, the project will benefit about 1 million people in the region.

Ms. Nalan Özgüven, CDM Smith project director, noted, “We will be looking at the integrated water management needs for these seven cities with the goal of increasing environmental standards through infrastructure investment. After a thorough master planning process, we will prepare designs and investment packages for water and wastewater projects in accordance with Turkish and EU legislation. Ultimately, the projects will improve quality of life for the residents, facilitate economic development and support Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union.”
