Effective Remediation of Petroleum Oxygenates and Related Compounds

The introduction of petroleum oxygenates, like MTBE, was beneficial for air quality, but created unanticipated consequences to groundwater and made remediation difficult. Ethanol has gained favor as a petroleum oxygenate, but its release into groundwater can complicate remediation for different reasons. Many in situ and ex situ technologies have been developed to address these recalcitrant compounds. Interestingly, the lessons learned from remediation of petroleum oxygenates can also be applied to the treatment of a chemically similar compound--the solvent stabilizer 1,4-dioxane.
