Tunneling Expert Mahmood Khwaja Joins CDM Smith as Principal Geotechnical Engineer

BOSTON—CDM Smith is pleased to announce that Mahmood Khwaja, PE, SE, has joined the firm as principal geotechnical engineer. Khwaja is an accomplished tunnel and geo-structural engineer, project manager and technical leader with 26 years of experience designing above and below ground structures. He has a master's in civil engineering and is a professional engineer in Massachusetts, Virginia, Nebraska, and New York.

Based in our Boston office, Khwaja will help deliver our tunneling projects, play an integral and strategic role promoting our tunneling capabilities to internal and external clients, and further develop our tunneling practice.

Prior to joining CDM Smith, Khwaja worked on notable projects, including the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel (Massachusetts Highway Department), 2nd Avenue subway (New York Metropolitan Transit Authority), Baltimore Red Line light rail transit (Maryland Transportation Authority), Deep Rock connector tunnel project (city of Indianapolis), Anacostia River tunnel (DC Water), and the Doha Metro (Doha, Qatar). He has worked on cut-and-cover, mined, bored and jacked tunnels; analyzed complex soil-structure interaction behavior using numerical methods; and designed above and below ground transit stations, tunnels, deep shafts and de-aeration chambers.

Khwaja is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers; Boston Society of Civil Engineer Section; Structural Engineering Institute; and Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. He has also taught courses at Boston Architectural College and University of Massachusetts, Lowell.
